Ibn Al-Qayyim Quotes

Imam ibn ul Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him ) said :

It is not possible for the lover of the dunya to free himself from three things :
- Permanent worry
- Continuous tiredness
- Regret that does not cease.

---------------------------

Imam Ibn ul-Qayyim رحمه الله

“If Allah wants well for a slave, He strips away from his heart the ability to see his own good deeds and speaking about them with his tongue, and preoccupies him with seeing his own sin, and it continues to remain in front of his eyes until he enters jannah.”

-----------------------------

The great scholar and Imam Ibn-ul-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him said ;There is absolutely nothing wrong in a man loving his wife and being passionate about her, unless that keeps him away from loving that which is more beneficial for him; loving Allah and his Messenger ﷺ.

-------------------------------

Imam Ibn ul-Qayyim (rahimahullah) said

“Losing time is harder than death, as losing time keeps you away from Allah and the Hereafter, while death keeps you away from the worldly life and your people.”

----------------------------

Grief, sorrow and distress only occur from two directions. One of it is, The desire for the worldly life and having a zeal for it. And the second is shortening in the actions of obedience and piety.

When Iblis refused to bow to your father Adam, he refused to bow to you, so why have you become his friend?

The whole world from its beginning until its end is not worth an hour of sadness, so what about the sadness of whole life.

“If Allah wants well for a slave, He strips away from his heart the ability to see his own good deeds and speaking about them with his tongue, and preoccupies him with seeing his own sin, and it continues to remain in front of his eyes until he enters jannah.”

“The truth is victorious and (sometimes) tested; so do not be suprised for this is the way of (Allah) the Most Merciful.”

------------------------

Piety has Three Levels:

  1. Protecting the heart and limbs against sin and forbidden actions.
  2. Protecting them against undesirable matters.
  3. Protecting against curiosity and whatever is not of one’s concern.

The first will grant life to the servant, the second will grant his health and power, and the third will grant him happiness and joy.

-----------------------------

Ibn Qayyim رحمه الله said: “Your soul is just like your enemy, once it finds you serious, it obeys you. If it finds weakness from you, it will take you as a prisoner.”

There are six stages to knowledge:

  • 1) Asking questions in a good manner.
  • 2) Remaining quiet and listening attentively.
  • 3) Understanding well.
  • 4) Memorising.
  • 5) Teaching.
  • 6) Acting upon the knowledge and keeping to its limits.
--------------------------------

The most beneficial remedy is that you preoccupy yourself with thoughts of what should concern you and not those that should not concern you. Thinking about what does not matter to you is the door of every evil. Whoever reflects upon what does not concern him, then he will miss what does concern him.

A divine narration states, “O son of Adam, I created you for My worship, so do not be diverted by amusement. I have made you responsible for My provision, so do not tire of working. O son of Adam, seek Me and you will find Me. If you find Me, you have found everything. If you have lost Me, you have lost everything, for I am most worthy of your love than anything.”

“Verily the life of man is in the life of his heart and his soul. And there is no life in the heart except by knowing its Creator, having love for Him, worshipping Him solely, turning to Him in times of need, and seeking tranquility with His remembrance. And he who loses this life has lost all good. Even if he attempts to substitute (this loss) with all that is in the world. For verily not even all of the world together would be able to replace this life. And verily for everything that a slave loses there is a substitute, but the one who loses Allah will never find anything to replace Him.”

Allah’s love

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah mentioned ten causes that result in Allāh’s love for His slave and the slave’s love for his Lord:

  1. Reciting the Qur'an while pondering over its meanings and what is meant by it.
  2. Getting closer to Allāh by performing voluntary deeds after completing obligatory deeds
  3. Continual remembrance of Allāh under all circumstances, with one’s tongue, heart and actions. The extent of one’s love of Allāh is determined by this
  4. Giving precedence to what He loves over what you love when you are overtaken by your desires
  5. The heart being avid of Allāh’s Names, and Attributes and the heart roaming in that garden of knowledge
  6. Observing Allāh’s kindness, goodness and bounties, both hidden and open
  7. And this is the most wonderful, the heart being soft, subdued and meek before Allāh
  8. Being alone with Allāh during the time when the Lord descends during the last portion of the night while reading His Book and ending that by asking for forgiveness and repenting
  9. Sitting with the beloved and sincere, benefitting from the most fruitful of their speech. And not to speak unless speaking is more beneficial and you know that it will improve your state and be beneficial to others
  10. Remaining away from every cause that comes between the heart and Allāh. These ten causes take the lovers to the station of true love and bring them to their Beloved.

Hearts have been classified into three types:

  1. The healthy and sound heart which contains no impediment preventing it from accepting the truth, loving it, and giving it preference. Its understanding of the truth is correct and it accepts it with complete submission.
  2. The dead, harsh, and dry heart that does not accept the truth or submit to it.
  3. The diseased heart, when its disease predominates it, joins the ranks of the dead and harsh heart. But if its soundness predominates, it joins the ranks of the truthful and sound heart.

“Whoever is arrogant against submitting to the truth; Allāh will humiliate him, degrade him, belittle him and make him lowly.”

Some things will be good for you and some will damage you. As you let life play itself out, do not get caught up in wasted feelings, debates and negative cycles of behaviour.

“From amongst the most beneficial remedies is constant du'aa.”

“Glorified be Allah! How many a heart is decayed yet its owner in unaware of it-the heart distorted (by that decay) and the heart swallowed in it. How many (a person) is put to trial by the praises he (recieves) from the people, decieved by Allah’s concealment of his (sin, shortcomings etc.) And being gradually led to destruction through the blessings Allah bestowed upon him (i.e. he utilizes those blessings to commit sins and feels safe from punishment). All these affairs are a punishment and humiliation, whilst the ignorant one thinks that it is nobilty.”
